For the past 10 years, John, True (who is now 14!), and I have been participating in the Lantern Walk, one of our favorite traditions at Waldorf schools.
As the days shorten and the nights lengthen, parents and teachers gather with our children, handmade lanterns in hand, and softly walk in procession through a park at twilight. There is quiet singing of songs about light, the voices of the littles piercing right through our hearts.
It’s a peaceful and powerful experience—a reminder that even in the darkest times, light will always guide the way.
This year, as we walked together, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of it all, knowing that this would be our last Lantern Walk with True, as he reaches the end of his Waldorf education and will soon be heading to high school. And watching all those little hands holding their lanterns, bright with hope and song, while the world around us feels so uncertain—it brought me to tears.
There is hope. And there is darkness.
Last week, my friend Beth wore a simple, handmade sign on her shirt that read, “Free hugs today. Just ask.” When I asked if anyone had taken her up on the offer, she said many did.
As the world feels heavier and more uncertain, I find myself reflecting on the light we each carry—and how much it matters, especially when our hearts feel unsteady.
Our small kindnesses, our resilience, our integrity —all light.
The art we make, the work we do, the persistence that keeps us moving forward even when we’re tired and weary — all beacons of light.
I’m going to imagine us all as little glowing lanterns, lighting up the world in our own ways. It gives me comfort to know you’re out there, tending to your light, making space for all the feelings, all the work ahead, and all the love and togetherness, too.
Thank you for your light—and for trusting that it is always worth sharing.
Big love,
Kelly Rae
