what in your life is calling you?
when all the noise is silenced,
the meetings adjourned, the lists laid aside,
and the wild iris blooms by itself in the dark forest,
what still pulls on your soul?
in the silence between your heartbeats hides a summons,
do you hear it?
name it, if you must, or leave it forever nameless,
but why pretend it is not there?

so i ask myself, what is calling me? at this moment in my life, what has seeped into my soul, quietly asking me to take notice? when i asked this question of myself a year or so ago, the answer was clearly a more creative life. art woke up one day and asked me to give it a chance. and so i did. now, a year or so later, if i really sit with this question, the answer is to continue on the artful path, but what’s also coming across loud and clear in my heart tonite is love. love. to pay more attention to tending to it. to let it come gently and to give it my full attention. to not carelessly take it for granted. yes, that’s it. tonite, this day, this week, this lifetime, that really is it.
ps-my mom has been sending me the best collection of quotes, affirmations, and thoughts lately. the above is one of them. much gratitude (and love) to her.
Thanks for sharing this and thanks to your mom.
I often need to regroup and pay attention to what is calling from inside. I’m easily distracted with all the noise in life. This is a beautiful reminder.
i’m so behind in my reading – you’ve already been to portland and back!!! sorry to hear about your pup’s mishaps, so much like a child’s. glad to hear you had a wonderful trip, and that you were inspired (not hard to imagine, with portland…). hope you are enjoying spring xoxo
mmmm…what a great question…i’m gonna take some time to sit with this one today…
So beautifully and perfectly stated, Kelly Rae. There’s a good lesson in that for us all, I think… The world would certainly be a better place.
Hugs, Shari
Kelly,
I have to say thank you so much for posting this. Something I needed to stop and dwell on for a moment or two. Art is in my soul and I dance around it way too much. Eye opener! Thanks again!

That quote, your post really speaks to me in the moment; where I am today and have been recently. I know what the silence says but sometimes I forget, sometimes i am afraid, and then sometimes i am brave…
what a blessed way to start my morning – windows wide open, sipping my first-cup-of-the-day coffee, and absorbing the beauty of your post. xox
England Dan and John Ford Coley would be so proud to hear your thoughts. 🙂 It’s true though–Love really is the answer to most questions. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful words…they call to me too.
that’s one of my favorite quotes! i used it on a canvas art journal from my trip to paris. it was so far removed, exploring gothic cathedrals and walking along the seine and sitting in sidewalk cafes, so far removed from my everyday job of constant meetings & email bombardment.
